Algorithmic and hardware developments in the area of smart sensing, modeling, analysis and actuation pave the way for advanced personalized cyber-physical (medical) diagnosis and online therapy. Towards this end, this special session will cover: (1) We discuss the design of multi-parametric epilepsy monitoring wearables targeting to provide solutions to two fundamental problems: personalization and energy-scalability. The first problem is addressed by proposing a self-learning methodology for epileptic seizure detection that allows to perform automatic labeling of seizures in order to generate personalized training data with minimal user intervention. The second problem is tackled in epileptic seizures detection by introducing the concept of self-awareness in wearable systems monitoring the cardiac and respiratory systems of the patient in order to decrease system energy consumption and improve seizures detection quality by machine-learning model enhancement. (2) Next, we will cover two basic challenges that we must overcome to establish a self-sufficient sensing modality for physiological monitoring. The first is with delivering power to the increasing number of sensing devices, especially when they are worn or implanted in the human body. The second is with communicating the sensed/analyzed data out of these devices efficiently. We will share the lessons learned while working on wireless biomedical implantable and wearable sensors and highlight remaining challenges. (3) Finally, we address the personalized medicine using the internet of medical things (IoMT). Specifically, we will overview IoMT challenges and research opportunities associated with (i) collecting the right data, (ii) clinical decision support, and (iii) physiological closed-loop control. In addition, we will present some promising solutions to aspects of the aforementioned problems in the context of remotely monitoring infant hypoxemia and the artificial pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes.
